Final Theatre performance

Last Sunday, our participants put into being the long awaited theatre performance at the Brady Art Centre, Hanbury Street.

Shiraj got certified!

On the 25th of November, one of our most serious, dedicated, and hard-working volunteers , Shirajul Islam, completed a Go On U.K. Online course and became a certified Basic IT instructor. Here in the picture above you can see Shiraj showing off his brand new qualification.

Great Success for our week-end Generation Bridge activities.

More than 40 people participated last weekend to the two events we organized in the context of Big Lottery funded project Generation Generation Bridge.

TOMORROW: CHILDREN ART COMPETITION

REMINDER: tomorrow, Saturday November 19, another Children Art Competition will be held at the Northolt Village Community Centre. It will start around 14. Everyone is invited.

Generation Bridge - Update

Over the last four weeks, MMWF organized three events in the context of the project Generation Bridge funded by Awards for All/Big Lottery Fund.

On October 28 a Poem Reciting competition.

On October 30, another session of the Elderly People Discussion Group.

 On November 4, the weekly appointment with the Cultural Program for Kids.

REMINDER: NOVEMBER 27 - THEATRE PERFORMANCE

On November 27, everyone is invited to the FINAL THEATRE PERFORMANCE of MMWF's cultural project MEMORY THEATRE, funded by Westfield Stratford. 20 young actors from our Borough have worked long and hard over the past months to transform a variety of real-life stories into a screenplay for theatre. Now this script has become a play.

The show will take place at Brady Art Centre in Hanbury Street, Tower Hamlets (just a 5-minute walk off Brick Lane) and is about 60 minutes long. Entrance is obviously FREE. More details on the exact time at which the play will start are to come in the next weeks.

Armfield Pensioners' Club / MMWF - a new cooperation.

Over the last months, we at The Monakka Monowar Welfare Foundation have come in contact with the Armfield Pensioners' club, a registered charity based at 42 Onslow Gardens, Enfield. The APC provides recreational facilities and social activities to elderly people in the North London area. As in our case, their commitment is to improve the quality of life of their weakest and most disadvantaged neighbours and fellow citizens. Today, three of our volunteers have inaugurated the collaboration between APC and MMWF by travelling to Enfield where they delivered an IT course at the APC's facilities. We are certain that the cooperation between our two charities will be long and fruitful, and certainly hope to be able to announce more joint-activities in the very next future.

Clothworkers’ Foundation: “Tower Hamlets in Your Hands” - an update

Once again, we must thank the Clothworkers' Foundation for the generous grant it awarded to us. Thanks to their support we are now running "Tower Hamlets in Your Hands", a project of which this blog is an integral part. The project is addressed to long-term unemployed people living in Tower Hamlets who want to provide a service to their community while learning new skills, expendable in the job market. The participants to the project receive free training on IT skills, setting up a blog and news publishing.

MEMORY THEATRE: the final performance

After weeks of work, our experimental project "Memory Theatre" funded by Westfield Stratfors is headed to its finish line.
On November 28, at the Brady Art Centre (192-196 Hanbury Street), the project's conclusive drama performance will take place. Everyone is invited to witness to the final product of our 15 participants' work on memory and heritage.

REMINDER: Children Cultural Programme

Time for a reminder. On Friday, November 4 at the Kobi Nazrul Islam Centre (30 Hanbury Street, E1 6QR) the Monakka Monowar Welfare Foundation  will organize the second day of the Children Cultural Programme funded by Lottery Fund. The EVENT WILL BEGIN AT 17 o'clock.
A third appointment will take place at the same venue on Friday the 18th of November.

Upcoming CV-writing WORKSHOP

Food Hygiene Workshop

In TWO DAYS, precisely on Sunday October 16th, 2011 at the Montefiore Center on Hanbury Street, the MONAKKA MONOWAR WELFARE FOUNDATION will present a new fortnightly session of our course on Food Hygiene - NBQ Level 2 funded by MuslimAid.

Remember that THE COURSE IS OPEN TO ANYONE INTERESTED IN CATERING (but not only...).

Children Art Competition

TOMORROW at the Montefiore Center in Hanbury Street, the MONAKKA MONOWAR WELFARE FOUNDATION organizes the Children Art Competition, an initiative that received widespread attention in the Tower Hamlets Borough, funded by Awards for All National Lottery Fund.

WorldSkills London 2011 (ExCel, London: 5-8 October)

Last week, 6 volunteers from our organization were invited by the British Council to take part to WorldSkills London 2011, the largest international skills competition for young people.

On our website you can check out more pictures of them enjoying a laugh and exchanging phone numbers with Simon Hunt and European Commissioner for Health Androulla Vassilou. WorldSkills took place at ExCeL London between the 5th and the 8th of October.

Tracing roots at the Archive

On Monday this week, a group of young residents in our Borough visited (see pictures) the Tower Hamlets local History Library and Archives, as part of the first phase - "Research and Dramatization" - of our 16-week "Memory Theatre" project, that was launched thanks to a community grant from Westfield Stratford City.

"Memory Theatre" will lay the foundations for another ambitious project, "Community Theatre", on which we will hopefully be able to embark within few months..

Westfield Community Grant: “Memory Theatre”

As a “taster” activity for a bigger project we want to organise in the future, we received a Westfield Community Grant to run a project based on Bengali memory and theatre.

Our participants will be visiting the Tower Hamlets Archive for inspiration and to understand the importance of memory and the meaning of oral history. Then they will be cooperating with the SRJB’52 Bengali Theatre Group to stage a traditional performance. All the training and activities will be completely for free.

Muslim Aid: “Skill Training for Tower Hamlets”

Thanks to the generous support by Muslim Aid, MMWF is organising a series of FREE employment-related training courses open to all!

The training sessions focus on CV writing, First Aid and Food Hygiene to work in the catering industry and are open to all people who need a boost to their career perspectives. We have already trained many people and other training sessions are coming: don’t miss this chance!

Introduction and activities of MMWF

British Council / Youth in Action: “Right to Choose!”

We are happy to announce that MMWF received a British Council/Youth in Action grant to implement the youth awareness project “Right to Choose!”

In the framework of this project a group of young participants from our local community will research the question of forced marriages and cousin marriages through interviews with their peer, elders, and professionals working on this issue. The participants will edit all the interviews and their project experience in a documentary film that will be shown locally and in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

If you are aged 13-25 and want to volunteer for this project just contact us or come to our office and we’ll be happy for you to take part!

         

Vote for “The Circle” on NatWest Community Force!

Our project, The Circle, has been selected by NatWest to participate in the Community Force competition!

The Circle is a women-only club where skills are shared through participant-led workshops. Each woman who takes part in the project delivers a workshop about something she can do, and, in addition to that, all the participants receive CV-writing, IT literacy, Health awareness and Women Rights training.  

NatWest is giving £6,000 to the project that receives the most votes in its area. Voting starts on Monday 26 September.

Awards for All / Big Lottery Fund: “The Generation Bridge”

MMWF received funding from Awards for All to organise a series of cultural events which will be concluded by a final exhibition with the aim of strengthening our local community.

As part of the cultural programme we will organise traditional Bengali folk songs shows, Bengali drama performances and poetry readings. All the generations from our community will be brought together to share memories and enjoy the beauty of their ethnic culture. If you want to know more about the dates and venues of our shows, please contact us.

We are also organising periodical art competitions for children. Bring your child over to our next session and let him/her express his/her artistic talent! Parents are welcome and refreshments will be provided. If you want your child to take part to the next competition, please contact us or come by to our office!

Clothworkers’ Foundation: “Tower Hamlets in Your Hands”

We are happy to announce that we received a generous grant from the Clothworkers’ Foundation to buy the IT equipment for our new project Tower Hamlets in Your Hands.

The project is addressed to long-term unemployed people living in Tower Hamlets who want to provide a service to their community while learning new skills, expendable in the job market. The participants will receive free training on IT skills, setting up a blog and news publishing. Once trained, they will work on a paper and online multi-lingual publication with all the news about local opportunities for training, work and low-cost leisure.
